"We, the common people of Scotland,
Do declare this day.
Our allegiance to Robert The Bruce,
And do further swear to follow him,
Wherever it may lead us,
That our land of Scotland,
Shall forever be free from oppression".
A Service from Centuries Past
Medieval Scots Weddings

I shall begin by telling all the philosophers and orators amongst you that I shall address you in the language of the common people of Scotland.

I shall not lard my words with terms that are not used daily.
I speak in the language maist intelligible tae the common fowk.

But first, I wish tae tell ye a' o' the state o' the world in the time some men called The Golden Age, or Age O' Wonder.

In those days there was no difference in status between men, neither in pre-eminence, dignity, superiority nor honour.  For at that time all men were equal and not divided. And the people lived together in ane tranquil and lovable community.

Their maist delicate feast was the fruits o' the Earth.

They drank the fresh wattir.....

Drawing from Medieval Scots tracts in the time of Wallace and Bruce, the Medieval Scots Wedding Ceremony is a moving and dignified service conducted for couples looking for a meaningful occasion to embellish their betrothment whilst being transported back to a Scotland freed after the Wars of Independence.

Although patriotic in tone, the Medieval writer, Robert Wedderburn, Vicar O' Dundee, is firmly in tune with the everyday people of the country and points out that there is "nae difference between the bones of a prince and the bones of a beggar".

The ceremony has a great sense of occasion and with the couple piped into the service area, the Clan Chief opens with Wedderburn's words of praise for the ordinary people of Scotland.

The Clan Marshall then observes that all weapons are at rest "that we may conduct this union in peaceful spirit".

The couple recite their lineage through three generations, the bride through the maternal line and the groom through the male line.  A quaich is passed with " a bottle of the finest" to replenish the vessel and there is more piping.

The service, around twenty minutes in length, ends with the entire congregation swearing allegiance to Robert The Bruce and the Chief's response, "Let the celebrations commence".

At present, The Medieval Scots Wedding has no legal status though we are hoping new legislation in 2000 will change the situation.  The choice of location is entirely down to yourselves. We are willing to travel anywhere to perform the service and we mean anywhere.

Exiled Scots in the Colonies are more than welcome and we can provide costumes (not Hollywood abominations) to add authenticity.  There is absolutely no requirement for either bride nor groom to be of Scottish descent as the ceremony, although patriotic towards Robert the Bruce, has a strong message of peace and is humanistic in tone.

It is not religious in tone at all and merely seeks to preach a message of understanding between all the peoples of the world.

So where is it performed?
The Medieval Scots Wedding has been conducted in Restaurants, Castles, Hotels and even in someone's home.

Generally the couple are married prior to the service in either a church or registrar's and often our service is a surprise event for the guests.

A slight alteration to the service makes it a Highland Blessing for couples celebrating a special anniversary and wishing to re-state their vows to each other whether they have been together four years or forty.

Participation of friends and family is welcomed in the form of ring-bearers, flower girls, guards, quaich-bearers or the customers own suggestion and we are willing to discuss input to the script to personalise the occasion further.

The Medieval Scots Wedding is conducted by actor Jock Ferguson as the Clan Chief.

Jock's credits as an actor include film roles in Chasing The Deer, The Bruce, MacBeth and The Complaynt Of Scotland. He has performed in all the disciplines and has 12 years experience as a professional.

Dave Nicolson plays the Marshall. Dave performs historic presentations for schools, corporate events and at tourist events. He provides a costume and weapon hire service and has worked as a stuntman in television programmes such as Ivanhoe and Rebellion.

Jock Ferguson the Clan Chief
This service has all the pomp and dignity of a church wedding but without the divisive nature of religion itself.

It is a warmer alternative to the formality of a registrar's office and each occasion is personalised to the point of making it unique.

The inclusive nature of the script ensures everyone takes part and whether you're from Kirkintilloch or the Khyber Pass, the Medieval Scots Wedding will be an occasion you will always remember for its message of peace, love and understanding between nations.

Other Services

Shonagh Price The Medieval Scots Wedding is only one of the entertainments the company provides.
Under the title Herald Films, we made the film The Complaynt Of Scotland, a political satire set in 1555 for BBC.
It featured Shonagh Price (pictured) of television's High Road in the lead role in a script adapted from a period text.

We are currently working on a Scots comedy set in the 25th century which features a musical version of the Declaration Of Arbroath, the national anthem in that year, in a piece which is more Mad Mac than Max.

We are looking to have it screened and are open to offers....

Themed Evenings

The company performs Jacobite-styled events with self-contained shows set in 1746.

These involve several characters from the second Jacobite uprising and include music along with costume and weapon displays.  These are audience inter-active with a strong helping of humour served with a historically accurate main course.  Male guests are required to swear themselves to Charles Edward Stuart's cause and are plaided up for the fray.  An unsuspecting female is married off to the Chief's daft brother Hengist but amid the hilarity, there is a Hanoverian spy in the camp, trying to stir up trouble.....

These can last anything from one hour to four, with ceilidh music to end the evening in style.

A Jacobite Murder Mystery night has been performed around the country both for individual companies and venues dealing with ticket sales.  These can be tailored to clients' needs and usually involve a cast of five in a night of interactive period entertainment.  They take the Jacobite show further with a death of a cast member followed by an investigation by the guests. The winning team receive a Scots quaich and we round it off with music.  It can be played straight or for laughs depending on the mood of the event. It suits us either way and works equally well on audiences.

Costume is available for hire and weapons if the guests seem peaceable.   Props too can be provided to dress venues for further atmosphere.

Our Jacobite events are historically accurate and the cast are well-versed in the period.  The humour in these events prevents them becoming history lessons nor do we seek to decry other nations who may or may not have given us difficulty in the dim, distant past. Everyone is welcome.

School Visits

Schools bookings are particularly welcome and costumed characters from Scots history provide interesting educational input to school history projects.

We can provide costumes and artefacts to embellish talks on various periods including the Wars Of Independence, The Jacobite Uprisings and subsequent Highland Clearances.

What do You Require?

We are open to discussions on developing themes and scripts for events both large and small.

The company has extensive experience in film, television and radio in all the disciplines from writing to post-production.  Single actors in costume or up to thirty characters can be provided.  Costume is available for hire and experienced wardrobe personnel if required.

We can and have covered everything from provision of wedding speeches to complete film scripts.  Corporate video enquiries are welcome with cameras and edit suites at our disposal.  Solo pipers are available in kilted attire or earlier costume and are experienced in weddings, Burns nights and sporting occasions.

There are pipers and there are pipers and ours don't trot out the same old stuff you usually hear. They play in Scots and Irish styles and novelty tunes can be learned as required. These guys are good!

The Company

We endeavour to provide quality material in all our work and high standards of discipline are required of all our performers.  We are not a re-enactment society and do not re-create battles or skirmishes.

Instead we put the emphasis on both solo and group performances in more intimate surroundings.  The majority of the actors and musicians employed are full-time and work in other areas of the industry.

We don't take any job that comes along and if it is outwith our field, we will try to re-direct a customer elsewhere.  However our scope is pretty broad and this site is intended as a glimpse into what we can do.

Distance is no object for work (especially if it's a warm country!) and we are ready to talk to customers.
