After a lifetime of choral singing, composing and accompanying, Valerie Thompson is launching herself into the world of solo singing. In 1997 and 1998 she was invited to sing the soprano solos in Tippetts 5 Negro Spirituals from "A Child of our Time" at the Algarve and Barcelona Festivals, where she was touring with the London Choral Society.
1999 saw her singing an opera aria and a work by Geoffrey Burgon at a wedding. In Autumn she organised and performed at a Charity Concert for Macmillan Cancer Relief at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford. This evening opened with one of Valeries own settings of a poem by Pablo Neruda, and she offered a variety of music from a (17th Italian song through Bellini to the (20th; a programme which showed her versatility and enthusiasm for a wide range of musical styles.
The end of the year was highlighted with an invitation to take the solos in Haydns Creation with a choral society near Redhill. This great work includes two long arias, several duets and trios and exposed entries for the Soprano soloist which lead the choir into their choruses.
Valerie studies singing with Nicky Kennedy in London and occasionally with Rowland Sidwell. She has taken part in Master-classes with David Wilson-Johnson and John Huw Davies.
Now Valerie is looking for more work in the Surrey/Sussex/London/Hants area and is available to sing at weddings, funerals or Memorial services, and also as a guest soloist with choral societies.
